Margaret Calvert OBE Graphic Design

Born in South Africa, Margaret is a typographer and graphic designer who is best known for her involvement in the design of Britain’s radical new road signing system; a project that she undertook with Jock Kinneir in the late 50s and early 60s and which continues to influence the way we travel today and was the subject of a recent interview with James May on the BBC’s Top Gear programme. More recently, she has been working on the typeface ‘New Transport’ with Henrik Kubel (a digital update of the original road sign letterform).

She is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, a Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art, a Fellow of the University of the Arts London, an Honorary Doctor of Letters at Brighton University, and a Royal Designer for Industry.
