An Interview with Tim Brown Judges Interviews

What are you passionate about? What motivates and inspires you?

Finding ways to apply design to the challenges that most effect people’s lives. I am not excited about redesigning a cell phone that has had plenty of attention before. I am excited about redesigning how we age more gracefully or how companies of the 21st century should be configured.

What is your greatest professional (and/or personal) accomplishment?

The design of IDEO.

Who has been your biggest influence?

Bill Moggridge, co-founder of IDEO and the one who showed my design was a voyage of discovery not a discipline.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given and who gave it?

Bill Moggridge told me about the 10 day rule. Never be away from you loved one(s) for more than 10 days at a time. I have abided by that pretty consistently and it has made a huge difference to my work and home life.

How does your creative conscience express itself in your work?

I have always been driven by the potential design has to have positive impact in the world. For that to happen, designers have to take responsibility for what they design and the Creative Conscience Awards encourage and reward that awareness.
